The WSUP team celebrated Global Handwashing Day in Tana on 15th October with other USAID funded projects in Madagascar: HIP-CCHANGE, Santenet 2, PSI, SALOHI, RanoHP, CRS Fara project
The day is aimed at increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases. The theme for this year is entitled “More than a day”.
WSUP gave a puppet show to communicate the message to school children. It is a story of an innkeeper and his family who have bad hygiene practice and notably with the meals they are serving in their little restaurant, there are many flies, no toilet, and no handwashing facility. The Chief of their neighbourhood commented on their bad hygiene practices and refused to eat there. Through information sharing, the inkeeper and his family changed their behaviour, installed handwashing facilities in their restaurant and were congratulated by the Chief. As a result, they saw an increase in customers in their restaurant and enjoyed better health.
